DIY Dreams

I’m not sure what’s gotten into me lately, but I just have the desire to make things myself. It’s possible that I’ve been reading entirely too much Young House Love, but where I used to think “Why DIY when I can PAY someone to do that?” I now think, “Huh. Maybe.”

Don’t get me wrong, my DIY dreams are small. I will not be remodeling my kitchen, or building anything. I might not be doing anything, if we’re being honest, but I currently WANT to do a few things. Since summer is quickly approaching, and my husband will be home for a couple of months, it seems like a great time to tackle a few projects. (My husband’s response to this madness? If you’re still into the idea in three weeks when school is out, then we’ll talk. Hmph.)

First up, our bedroom. We had all boring brown furniture in there when we moved here. It’s all of our original bedroom furniture. We quickly replaced the nightstands for these darling white numbers that I can’t get enough of. However, we still have a giant brown bed, and dresser. I would love to paint the dresser, but I haven’t decided on a color. We could always go white, but I also love the idea of maybe grey or blue. I love the blue in the painting tutorial here, but I think it might be a lot in such a big dresser.

I would also love a new headboard, but I’m pretty sure that’s not something I would be able to do myself. I mean, sure, the tutorial says MDF, beadboard, trim, paint, DONE. Want to come over and help me build a headboard?

Thanks to Pinterest, I’ve felt the itch to sew for a while. Many years ago I learned to sew, and my mom has a machine that I can borrow, so I think we’ll definitely be hearing more about my sewing woes this summer.

We need a little curtain for our laundry room window and I think even I can sew in a straight line. But can I do more?

I would love to make pillowcase dresses for Bubette. Again, this is essentially straight line sewing.

But can I make something for myself? I mean, sure I can BUY a maxi skirt, but can I make one? Or even a dress?

What say you? Have I completely lost my mind or do you want to point me toward any painting or sewing tutorials that I must see?

  1. Oh man, Pinterst is really getting my sewing itch a-goin'. Since I have a hard time finding jean shorts, I'm searching jean short tutorials so I can make my skinnies awesome with some lace.

  2. Oh, I feel you! I am insistent that I could pick up carpentry if only I had the time! And I have a groupon for a sewing class I haven't used, but keep daydreaming of sewing all my own skirts and shirts, and for the girls too!

  3. I am dying to learn how to sew. I talked with a girl here http://www.fashioncampoc.com/ who said they offer classes in the evenings for women. I'm totally thinking of signing up because I want to make pillow case dresses too and new drapes and pillows for my house!

And now I have a GREAT tip. If you want your dresser repainted...take it to an auto body shop. Do you ever watch "Sarah's House" on HGTV? She gets everything repainted. I *might* know a body shop who would paint it for you.

    1. We should take sewing classes together!

Oh, and now I would really like to win that gift certificate! That never occurred to me to have a body shop paint it. What does something like that cost?

  5. I WISH I could sew! I think if I were innately more creative, I'd be crafting and doing a lot more projects than I do at present. Love that pillow dress BTW

  7. Xbox Live comes in two flavors, Silver and Gold, but regardless of which you choose,
you can integrate it with Windows Live Messenger. t like to spend too much on investing in code, then you can definitely
always aim for Free Xbox codes. The second type is the
almost legitimate programs that are encountered less than the fake type and has been created
with good intentions and was filled with legal, valid codes.
