Resolutions

Let’s do this.

1. Finish all five seasons of Friday Night Lights. Start and finish The West Wing. Cross my fingers and hope that Felicity becomes available on Amazon Instant Streaming.

2. Commit to figuring out if canceling cable is a good decision for this family, which means doing the research and doing the math.

3. Walk or ride bikes to school at least once a week.

4. (I’m cringing as I write this) Train for and run a 5k. I might hate it. I’m planning to hate it, but I need to do it, even if it’s just to swear I’ll never do it again. (I might have already chosen the 5K I’ll run, AND recruited two people to suffer alongside me. Now for the actual running part.)

5. Continue to have one date night per month with my husband. I stopped writing about these, but we managed to do this all the way through last year. We’ve even gone so far as to start paying a teenage babysitter. As an added bonus, our neighbor has asked to trade babysitting once a month so we can go see a movie.

6. Attempt at least one new recipe per month.

7. Get a job. To be clear, I’m not planning to become a full time working lady. The job I have my eye on will allow me to work from home part of the time, and use the time Bubette will be in school (starting in the fall) to do the rest. Every finger crossed over here. (Yes, I’m fully aware that having one job in sight is a bit… short-sighted. This is just a starting point.)

January Organization/Cleaning Goal: Do not leave the house or go to bed with dishes in the sink.

  1. I've been trying to talk my husband into canceling cable for five years. He's finally coming around to it.

And I'm impressed with your once a month date night. I need to make this a goal of mine.

    1. Do it. It's so worth it. Babysitters were the hardest part for us. We used a combination of grandparents, trading sitting with friends, and paying a sitter. I prefer to pay someone because there's no guilt, no need to repay anyone. But, that's obviously the most expensive option, and can get kind of frustrating to spend that kind of money to pay someone to watch TV while your kids sleep.

  2. I thought I'd hate running and I didn't at first, I really liked it, and then I hated it after a while, I got bored.

date nights are a marriage saver.

    1. Truth. Sometimes I spend all month looking forward to those few hours on a Saturday night.

  3. I HEART FNL and miss that show dearly. Anytime one of the actors pops up on other shows (one currently has a recurring role in Parenthood), it makes me sad to think that show had to end so soon.

I just started the Couch to 5K program and have been loosely following it for a few weeks now. If I can do it in 20 degree Chicago temps, you can definitely do it in Southern California! Just think of me bundling up every time you feel sluggish about getting outside to run. =)

    1. It's funny you say "soon" about the ending of Friday Night Lights, because I have 88 hours of episodes ahead of me, and I truly can't imagine ever finishing.

I have Couch to 5K on my phone, and that's it. It's just the logistics that are getting me now. The only time I can go our without children is while it's quite dark in the morning or at night. I wonder if I can wait for the time change to start training. Or at least until it stays light later than 5pm. I'm a giant wuss in the dark.

  4. Good luck! My husband would never go for canceling cable - we are die hard sports watchers. Starting running again is on my list too, and I even figured out today which days to run!

  5. If it weren't for the sports, I think we'd be able to cancel cable too. There are so many great options for watching online these days!

    1. The sports are the only reason I haven't done it already.

  6. I NEED to do the same January cleaning goal. I hate waking up to dirty dishes in the sink yet I leave them for the morning all the time.

A monthly date is also on our goal list. I should probably start trying to figure out what we want to do this month.

  7. Re: #2...we JUST decided to cancel cable and get hulu plus in addition to amazon prime and netflix, which we already had. So OF COURSE our internet has gone out twice in the last week. I am going out of my damn mind.

    1. That's my fear. We're actually considering downgrading to the most basic package, which is only network channels, but we watch A LOT of that, and we would keep our DVR for those. Then we would add Netflix and Hulu, IF we can figure out something for sports. We'll see.

  8. I have the Felicity series on DVD, so if you want to borrow it before it becomes available...let me know!
